Not many kids have a foundation launched in their honor before they're born. But that will be one of the many privileges bestowed upon Nicole Richie and Joel Madden's baby, due in January.

The couple hosted a surprise baby shower Monday for 100 expectant and new moms at the Los Angeles Free Clinic in Hollywood, where they handed out more than $200,000 worth of gifts. "The looks on their faces were priceless," Richie told reporters after the shower. "Some of them didn't even believe us [when they saw the gifts]. They thought we were joking."

The Richie Madden Children's Foundation (at richiemaddenfoundation.com), Madden said, was an idea the couple had when they found out they were expecting. "We grew up in Los Angeles," he said, "and we want our child to be a part of the community, and to know that there's a responsibility to help the community."

Actress Nicole Kidman is taking legal action against a British newspaper over claims it jeopardized her position as celebrity spokeswoman for a perfumery. The star is suing the Daily Telegraph over claims Kidman preferred Jo Malone's White Jasmine and Mint scent to the product she endorses, Chanel No.5. The article stated Nicole had been "dabbing it on whenever she had a moment" while in the U.K. to promote her new film The Golden Compass. A statement from law firm Schillings - which is acting on Kidman's behalf - insists the allegations were "entirely untrue" and "grossly defamatory." It adds, "We have been instructed to obtain an immediate retraction of such allegations and are taking separate action against the Daily Telegraph."

Nobody can distract Bill Clinton from a hot tamale like Penelope Cruz - not even intimidating Vogue editrix Anna Wintour. Last Thursday, Clinton was seated next to Wintour and Queen Sofia of Spain at the Spanish Institute Gold Medal Gala on Park Avenue. According to David Patrick Columbia's socialdiary.com, "Mr. Clinton was seated next to the Queen of Spain, on her right, and Mr. Oscar de la Renta was on her left. To the left of Mr. de la Renta was Ms. Cruz, and to the right of Mr. Clinton was Anna Wintour . . . The real highlight of the evening was watching the former president eventually forsake the editor of Vogue as a dinner partner and switch his seat with Mr. de la R so that he could be seated next to the movie star." After being presented with a medallion from Queen Sofia, Clinton told the audience, "I was trying to figure out exactly why I would receive this award tonight. It may be because, even though I'm not of Spanish descent, I've seen every one of Penelope Cruz's movies - and I liked them all."
