This has caused great debate not only in MA, but nationally.
Written by Eve Ensler, ''The Vagina Monologues'' is a series of short scenes based on her interviews with more than 200 women around the globe.
I was lucky enough to be in a production of this show--but I was in college. I sure as hell know that this would not have flown at my high school. Hell, we couldn't do "Grease" because it was too controversial and we almost didn't get to do "West Side Story." I have no doubt that a show that contains an entire monologue about "the C-word" would cause outrage in the conservative small town where I grew up.
However, I think that if this community is behind the production (and the majority seems to be), and since the performers obtained permission from their parents, I'm having trouble seeing what's so wrong with the idea. The show is NOT just about sex. It's about sexuality, rape, love, growing up, international oppression of women, domestic violence, etc. Additionally, you know what you're getting yourself in to when you go--I mean the show has the word "VAGINA" in the title for gosh sakes! It's not like you're going to round up the kiddies and head to the show and be surprised.
