Goodbye, Mr. Charles

Ray Charles, the Grammy-winning crooner who blended gospel and blues in such crowd-pleasers as "What'd I Say" and heartfelt ballads like "Georgia on My Mind," died Thursday, a spokesman said. He was 73.

Talented doesn't even begin to describe this man. I love his version of "Georgia on My Mind." I remember when he sang it in the opening credits of "Designing Women."

He is a legend.

1 Sad. These deaths usually come in threes. I wonder who's next?

3 GB - that is what I thought too!

4 Damn, and I just caught an episode of Crossroads on CMT the other night with him and Travis Tritt performing together (seeing a guy in his 70's playing nasty/funky synth riffs is one thing; seeing him do it behind a Travis Tritt song was swee-ee-eet...

5 As soon as I heard this I thought about the rule of 3s too. Maybe somehow that won't happen. We've lost two American legends in one week.

6 He was born Ray Charles Robinson, and when he started in the biz he dropped his last name to avoid being confused with boxer Sugar Ray Robinson. How can you have such a cool name from birth, then change it arbitrarily and have it be even cooler?

7 As much as I respect Reagan in many ways, I'd still pay a pilgrimage to Brother Ray's funeral first.
