Words to Live By

"Rescue Me" star Denis Leary didn't give a typical graduation speech at the Emerson College ceremony where he copped an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, reports the Boston Herald.

"I didn't prepare a bunch of stuff to say to you guys because I know you want to get out of here and get drunk," the 1979 grad and former writing instructor said. In his expletive-laden speech, Leary man aged to avoid most of the clichés that mar such occasions, especially that old "these- are-the-best-days-of-your-lives" chestnut. "That's bull [bleep]," Leary said.

"These are not the best days of your lives," he told the grads, adding that the students will leave school, get married, have kids, stop having sex, get colonoscopies and go through menopause. Lastly, Leary thanked Emerson for his Ph.D. degree "because I'm going to hold it over every one who works for me."

1 There was a study done a few years ago involving people around 80 years of age. They were asked to rank the decades of their lives as to the best and worst. Every one of them ranked their 20s as the worst.

2 True, but the 30's haven't been so hot either. Please tell me the highlights aren't the teen years!!!

3 I'll be 45 in Sept.I think it gets better in your late 30s and goes along pretty well until you start to deteriorate - around 80 maybe? Remember too though that those 80-year-olds, lived through the Depression and WWII.

4 Emersonians love Denis Leary! Tom Brokaw spoke at my graduation (class of 1991). I remember him saying we would not remember his speech, he was correct.
