RIP Eight Belles

I was so sad to see the fall (and soon thereafter, death) of Eight Belles during the Kentucky Derby. She finished in second place, but collapsed moments later with two broken front ankles. An ambulance reached the track and euthanized her on the spot. The on-call vet told the AP, "There was no possible way to save her. She broke both front ankles. That's a bad injury."

Too bad he couldn't euthanize Speidi while he was at it:

1 1 - I would personally like to punch the PETA person responsible for the call to suspend Eight Belles' jockey, comparing horse racing to dog fighting. These people take radical positions, and it often doesn't bother me that much. But to be so ignorant about something, just because animals are involved, doesn't mean PETA should inject its ridiculous views and make a national story out of things. 2 - I don't like how they're trying to turn the Derby into a celebugasm ... Billy Bush? Come on ...

2 I'm heartbroken. I raced sled dogs for a couple of years and know that the dogs were given better care, treatment, and love than any household pet. I know Eight Belles' was loved. I'm saddened and will not watch another race. This is no one's fault. My heart goes out to Larry et al. Keep the faith. (I'm also a vegetarian tree hugger, but this was a freak accident of the sport.)
