House of Carters

Nick and Aaron Carter came to blows at their home on Monday, the night before they announced their new E! reality show House of Carters at the Television Critics Association gathering in Los Angeles.

Asked what caused the dustup, Nick, 26, said, "Eh, we're brothers, it happened." Aaron, 18, added, "Yeah, we're brothers, but this time ..." He then lifted his bangs to expose a bruise near his hairline, above his left eye.

How did the fight start? "Aaron jumped me and I jumped him back," Nick said, revealing only that they'd been arguing "over a little misinterpretation." Aaron's twin sister, Angel, said a House of Carters cameraman broke up the fight. The whole scuffle was caught on tape. "You'll see it on the show," said Aaron.

House of Carters, which debuts in October, features all five siblings living together in L.A. and trying to work on their relationship away from their parents. Backstreet Boy Nick is meant to serve as the family role model.

The Carter parents, Jane and Robert, have had strained relationships with their children. In 2004, the same year his parents went through a messy divorce, Aaron petitioned for legal emancipation from Jane, who was his manager, over a financial dispute.

Besides Nick, Aaron and Angel (an aspiring model), the Carter brood includes sisters Bobbie Jean, 24, who is considering culinary school, and Leslie, 20, a singer who'd been living in Toronto.

Rent-A-K. Fed

Want K-Fed to attend your party? It will cost you!

Britney SpearsÂ’ hubby has been earning extra cash by charging to show up at soirees; his fee for a cameo, according to In Touch Weekly, is a whopping $20,000.

And Spears is reportedly thrilled that, with Rent-A-Kevin and other gigs, her former back-up dancer actually has an income. In fact, Federline has supposedly earned $700,000 in the last four months.

Among K-FedÂ’s other paying gigs, according to ITW: an estimated $250,000 for endorsing clothing line Blue Marlin and $25,000 per day to hawk such products as Virgin Mobile cell phones, where he made his infamous plea to save the penny. HeÂ’s negotiating to sign a deal with Jive Records, which happens to be SpearsÂ’ label, for $300,000 per album, and he also hopes to bring out his own line of jeans and beach jewelry.

Casting News

Angelina Jolie will play Mariane Pearl, the widow of slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, in a movie produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B production company, Pitt has confirmed.

"The film will focus on the deep collaboration between people around the world in search of Daniel in 2002," Pitt said. "We hope the film can increase understanding between people of all faiths and portray the story and the people involved as honestly as possible without anger or judgment."

Contrary to reports claiming that Pitt's ex, Jennifer Aniston, was earlier cast as Mariane Pearl, a rep for Pitt and Jolie said, "Jennifer was never attached to that role. When the project was first brought to Plan B, Jen was a partner in the company at the time."

The film will be adapted from Pearl's memoir, A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Danny Pearl, which chronicles her experience after her husband was abducted by Islamic extremists in Pakistan in early 2002. A month later, his captors released a video depicting his murder.

Pearl, a French journalist, was pregnant when her husband was kidnapped and gave birth to their son Adam in May of that year. "I am delighted that Angelina Jolie will be playing my role in the adaptation of my book," Pearl said in a statement released Thursday by Paramount Vintage. "I deeply admire her work and what she is committed to."

Quit Whining, Ben

Ben Affleck insisted on making an appearance in Kevin Smith's upcoming Clerk's sequel after the cult director pointed out the movie would be the first he'd made in a decade that didn't feature the actor.

Affleck, who has appeared in most of Smith's quirky comedies, insisted on a walk-on part on the film and upgraded his role to a speaking part once he was on the set of "Clerks II."

Smith says, "He said, 'OK, I want to be involved, but I don't want to do any dialogue. I just want to be like a background person.' Then he was like, 'I feel like I should say something...' so I gave him a line."

Don't F--- With This Movie

Elisabeth Shue warned us years ago: ''Don't f--- with the babysitter.'' Disney isn't heeding her admonition.

They're remaking Adventures in Babysitting, the apparently beloved comedy-adventure starring Shue as a put-upon high-school senior whose boring night babysitting turns into a Dante-esque odyssey through blighted '80s cityscapes. So who's the new Shue? Raven-Symone , of That's So Raven .

Bad Casting

Usher, the silky voiced R&B superstar, will soon be crooning a Broadway melody. The multi-platinum recording artist and five-time Grammy winner will take over the role of conniving lawyer Billy Flynn in the long-running musical revival "Chicago," making his Broadway debut, producers Barry and Fran Weissler announced Friday.

"I have always admired Broadway actors for their showmanship, dedication and focus that goes into performing live on stage every night," the 27-year-old Usher said in a statement. "Being on Broadway allows you to connect to audiences in a whole new way that's different from music and movies."

Usher opens Aug. 22 in "Chicago" and will appear through Oct. 1.

"Chicago," Broadway's longest running musical revival, has a score by John Kander and Ebb and a book by Bob Fosse and Ebb. The tale of Roxie Hart, a has-been chorus cutie who murders her boyfriend and tries to ride the notoriety to show-biz fame and fortune, originally was seen on Broadway in 1975. The Weissler-produced show, winner of six Tony Awards, opened in 1996 and has been seen around the world.

Barry Weissler has developed the replacement strategy for his long-running shows, including "Grease" and "Annie Get Your Gun," into a fine art. In "Chicago," its morally relaxed heroine has been played by such diverse actresses as Brooke Shields, Melanie Griffith, Sandy Duncan, Marilu Henner and Rita Wilson. Among the actors who have played Billy Flynn on Broadway are Huey Lewis, Wayne Brady, Kevin Richardson, George Hamilton, Taye Diggs, Alan Thicke and Billy Zane.

RIP

Red Buttons, an impish redheaded comic whose career included vaudeville, an Oscar-winning dramatic role and guest spots on The Cosby Show and Roseanne, died Thursday of vascular disease at his home in the Century City area of Los Angeles, according to publicist Warren Cowan. He was 87.

Born Aaron Chwatt and raised in the Bronx, Buttons got his nickname when he was a young singing waiter whose uniform had a lot of buttons on it. "Red" referred to his carrot top.

In 1952, after a long and successful career as a Borscht Belt comic (Buttons's musical theme was "The Ho-Ho Song," to which he danced on one leg), he starred in TV's The Red Buttons Show. The high point of his career came with the 1957 film adaptation of the James Michener World War II novel, Sayonara, starring Marlon Brando. Buttons played Airman Joe Kelly, an American who marries a Japanese woman (Miyoshi Umeki). Both characters commit suicide rather than continue to endure the prejudice they encountered.

Buttons won the Supporting Actor Oscar for the role – and went on to become highly visible in movies for the next 20 years and on TV nearly until his death.

Other movies included The Big Circus, Hatari! The Longest Day, They Shoot Horses, Don't They? The Poseidon Adventure and Pete's Dragon. He also appeared on TV shows such as The Cosby Show, Roseanne and Dennis Miller Live.

No More Foie Gras In Chicago

In a few weeks it will be illegal to sell foie gras in Chicago; but fans of the delicacy are not going quietly into the night.

On a recent evening more than 100 of them paid $150 each to dine on grilled foie gras with cherry chutney and peppercorn brioche; salt and herb cured foie gras with lamb prosciutto; ravioli of foie gras, pheasant and apple and other treats as chefs talked of overturning the ban. “It does bother me the way it’s raised, but then my grandfather raised cattle in Kansas, so I’m very aware of what farm life is like,” said Pati Heestand, a retired graphic designer and foie gras aficionado.

ChicagoÂ’s City Council in April voted to make the city the first in the country to ban the restaurant sale of foie gras, which detractors argue is inhumanely produced by force-feeding ducks and geese through a tube to fatten their livers.

The ban is to take effect Aug. 22 when restaurants found selling foie gras will face a $500 fine.

TMI

After a recent jellyfish attack while on vacation in Majorca, Spain, Michael Douglas joked about having his son pee on his back to help with the pain of the sting.

Douglas explained, "I took my kids down to the ocean the other day and we had a little problem - we have jellyfish. I got stung actually pretty bad, across my back just last week. There's sort of a remedy that we've all heard...urine. It's the remedy if you have a bad sting.

"So I asked my five-year-old son if he would pee-pee on my back. He looked at me like he'd gone to heaven. He was like 'This is what I call a good summer holiday! Pee-pee on daddy's back!' I don't know if it helped at all, but my son was happy. We'll work it out in 20 years (when he's in therapy)!"

K. Fed and Shar To Duet?

Last weekend, Kevin Federline snuck out of the house to see kids Kori, and Kaleb – without the permission of controlling wife, Britney Spears reports Star Magazine. Brit doesn’t allow Kevin to see the kids without her presence. Controlling Brit seems to be the opposite of Kev’s ex-wife, Shar, “Shar is always sympathetic when Kevin comes to pick up the kids and pour his troubles out to her.”

To make matters worse, a romantic duet is in the works with Kevin and Shar. The duo plan to record a newer version of Bobbi Brown’s hit “Get Away.” Hmm, notice any messages there? Kevin “hasn’t told Britney about it…And when she finds out, I think she’ll go ballistic. When Britney hears that Kevin is getting back together with Shar…I think it could be the last straw for her.” The source continues, “Kevin doesn’t seem to care. He said, ‘So I’m gonna make a record with Shar. Big deal.’”

In other news, Kevin Federline is reportedly in talks with his wife's label Jive Records reports Sfgate. The former dancer announced plans last year to become a rapper, but has so far failed to land a record contract. However, the New York Daily News reports Federline, 28, is hoping Jive will welcome his musical attempts with open arms.

Kathy Ticks Off Some of Her Gays

Chelsea gay club Splash is throwing a hissy fit over comic Kathy Griffin.

Club spokesman Len Evans tells us Griffin - the star of Bravo's "Life on the D-List" who often talks about her gay friends in her stand-up act - has turned down an offer to perform there in September. "We offered her $5,000, but she wanted 30 grand plus a $10,000 rider," Evans says.

"On her show she's always like, 'My gays' and 'I love the gays,' but it's totally opposite in real life. We were taken aback by her response. If she had love for her gay fans she'd do it. I mean, J.Lo just performed at Gay Pride for free. I guess it's all about the money." Griffin's publicist said, "Any public appearances or stand-up bookings go through her agent."

Give Me A Break

Jaime Pressly has advised supermodels Cindy Crawford and Elle Macpherson to stay away from acting, insisting they should stick to modelling.

The My Name is Earl star recognizes Crawford, Macpherson and socialite Paris Hilton as great businesswoman, but is baffled by their acting attempts.

Pressly says, "Cindy Crawford can't act. I mean, she's a sweet lady and she's beautiful and gorgeous. She is a great businesswoman, though. "Elle MACpherson too. I'm not going to take that away from them. "Paris, even before anything ever happened to her, always had plenty. No matter what her lack of talent is, her real talent is being a great businesswoman."

--One decent show and a recent Emmy nomination, and she can start lecturing on acting? Give me a break.

Huh?

Is former big-screen everyman Chevy Chase trying to start a feud with his modern-day counterpart, Vince Vaughn?

"Recently, I saw a commercial with, is it Nicole Kidman? No, no - Jennifer What's Her Name? from 'Friends,' " Chase tells Details. "And some guy. I had never seen him. I don't know who the [bleep] he is. He looks like some refrigerator repairman." (Chase was referring to a commercial for the Jennifer Aniston/Vaughn comedy, "The Break-Up.")

Chase, who starred in "Caddyshack" and "Fletch," also relays a weird running joke he shares with his teenage daughter. "My youngest, who's 17, seems to be identical to the way I was in my perception of the world," he told Details. "I mean, I can remember the first time I called her a whore. We just laughed for half an hour. Because she's anything but. But she gets it immediately and laughs. I'd call her every day down at school; she might pick up and say, 'Whoretown!' She said something the other day like, 'Dad, how much should I charge?' "

Riiiigggghhhhtttt

Hotel heiress Paris Hilton has put herself on a one-year sex ban.

The socialite thinks that steering clear of all sexual activity will help her to "rediscover" herself. Paris told chat show hosts Regis and Kelly: "I'm doing it just because I want to. I feel I'm becoming stronger as a person. "Every time I have a boyfriend, I'm just so romantic, and I'll put all my energy into the guy, and I don't really pay attention to myself."

The blonde, who is releasing her first single Stars Are Blind this month, has already revealed she doesn't believe in one-night stands. She said: "One-night stands are not for me. I think it's gross when you just give it up. "Guys want you more if you don't just hand it to them on a platter. If they want you, then they will wait.

"You have to make them work for it. I think that's the only way you know if they really want you or just want to be able to brag that they've been with you."

When Law and Hollywood Collide

What happens when two Supernovas collide? Lawsuit.

A Southern California rock band called Supernova has filed a complaint against Mark Burnett's CBS reality show "Rock Star: Supernova," saying it had the name first.

The complaint, filed June 27 in U.S. District Court, claiming unfair competition and trademark infringement, seeks to bar the show and its participants from using the Supernova name. It is also asks for compensatory and punitive damages. "Our clients believe they have the superior right on the mark Supernova," the band's attorney, John Mizhir, told The Associated Press Tuesday, adding that the band "has a long-standing common-law trademark right to the mark."

The group first performed under the name Supernova in 1991, according to the lawsuit. The band released several singles and three full-length albums under the name, the lawsuit says. The CBS show using the name first aired July 5. "Rock Star: Supernova" follows 15 contestants who aspire to become the lead singer of Supernova, a new rock band that includes former Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, former Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke and former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted. The winner will tour with the band and appear on its album.

According to the lawsuit, representatives for Mark Burnett Productions ("Survivor," "The Apprentice") filed seven U.S. trademark applications for the name Supernova and two for "Rock Star: Supernova." Gary Hecker, an attorney for Mark Burnett Productions, said the company has the legal right to the name.

Once a Loser...

Joey Buttafuoco, who gained notoriety in the 1990s when his teenage girlfriend shot his wife in the face in New York, was sentenced to a year in jail Tuesday after pleading no contest to possessing ammunition as a felon.

Probation officers found the ammunition during a search of his home in Chatsworth, California, last August. Buttafuoco had been sentenced to a year in jail and five years' probation in March 2004 after pleading guilty to insurance fraud.

Prosecutors said Buttafuoco, who co-owned an auto body shop in the San Fernando Valley, told undercover investigators how to file false claims and cheat insurance companies. Buttafuoco, 50, was ordered to report to jail on November 1.
